VONK, Virginia M.

Passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus, February 22, 2016. She was born on January 25, 1929 in Grand Rapids, to the late Helmer and Evelyn (Malmberg) Peterson. Virginia was a lifelong resident and longtime member of First Evangelical Covenant Church. She was married for 49 years to Cornelius Vonk who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her grandson, Joshua Vonk; brother-in law, Clyde Stout; and sisters-in-law, Edith Collins and Elaine Peterson. Virginia will be remembered for her love of family, playing the piano and especially, for her Lord, Jesus. She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Shirley) Vonk of Wyoming, David (Laurie) Vonk of Hudsonville, Peter (Alma Davis) Vonk of Lansing; grandchildren, Kim (Shane) Gahlau, Tanya Daniels, Jeremy (Kelly) Vonk, Kerri (Mark) Burns, Holly (Matt) Smit, Jared (Leah) Vonk, and Joseph (Arielle) Proctor; and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Alice (Robert) Stouten of Ft. Myers, FL, Gladys Stout of Ionia, Marian (Elmer) Slachter of Grand Rapids; brothers, Raymond (Loraine) Peterson of Grand Rapids, and Loren Peterson of Sparta; and many nieces and nephews. Virginia's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Georgetown Manor who took such wonderful care of her and to Chaplain Rick Kiekintveld for his many visits. Friends may visit with her family on Thursday, from 4-8 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Homes, Alt & Shawmut Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW. A funeral will be held Friday, at 11:00 AM at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 1933 Tremont Blvd NW, visiting from 10-11 AM. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Covenant Church or to Spectrum Health Hospice.
