Vander beek-Powell, Mary L. Portage Dedicated Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, passed away from this life to her eternal home on Tuesday afternoon, November 30, 2021 at the age of 103. Mary was born February 9, 1918 in Mattawan, MI the daughter of Roy and Jessie (Fish) Hiscock. Mary lived a life that revolved around family. Though early on she enjoyed hobbies golf, bowling, cooking and reading and later her involvement with ECHO Organization (Dedicated on Hope Against World Hunger), her real love was always being generous to others and consistently put others' needs before her own. She displayed common sense and kindness endearing her to others. Her church played a pivotal part in her life with early on being a member of Milwood Christian Reformed Church, Fourth Reformed Church and later, Pine Island Presbyterian Church. On October 14, 1939 she was united in marriage to Nicholas VanderBeek who preceded her in death on March 7, 1999. Mary was also preceded in death by husband, Russ Powell; her son Larry VanderBeek; brothers and sister, Maurice, Leon, Richard, William, Carl, and Harold Hiscock, and Lois Mitchell. She is survived by her son, Roger (Susan) VanderBeek, daughter in law Patti VanderBeek Bluck; 5 grandchildren, Scott (Laura) VanderBeek, Marc VanderBeek, Greg (Jeni) VanderBeek, Mali (Jason) Julien, and Krissi (Joe) Famolaro; 16 great-grandchildren, Colin, Mara, Gregory, Lincoln, Louie VanderBeek, Alexandra VanderBeek Rosell (David), Sara, Bella, Mia, Lila, Max, Eden, Eliana Julien, and Anthony, Sean and Sophia Famolaro plus many nieces and nephews. Prior to her death, Mary lived independently at Crossroad Villages with her beloved cat "Lucy" and her final year at Bickford Senior Living who did a wonderful and amazing job in her final care. As per Mary's final wished, a private graveside service will be held at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Nicholas, of 59 plus years.
