Age 78, passed away on February 26, 2020, with family at his side. He was born in Kalamazoo on July 3, 1941, the son of the late Sherman and Shirley (Kornmann) Kistler. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Class of 1959. From a young age Ted had a passion for music and theatre. In the 60's, he partnered with Jim Brignall to create the Campus Singers folk duo. He was also a part owner of the Side-Door coffee house. While there, he met and fell in love with Mary Jo Herron who was also had a passion for the arts. They were united in marriage in 1965 and remained in love until her passing in 2010. In 1966 Ted and Mary Jo founded the New Vic Theatre which is still operating and has come to be known for its classic holiday production of "A Christmas Carol." The theatre, its members and patrons were Ted's greatest passion and he considered them all as family. His spirit and energy within the New Vic will never be forgotten or replaced. When not performing, Ted enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving father and fantastic grandfather. He would do anything for his family and friends, he leaves them with many wonderful memories to cherish. In 2011, Ted was married to Sharon Kistler who survives. He is also survived by his loving children, Karla (Timothy) Stone, Scott (Nancy) Kistler, Jennifer (Jim) Furney; step-children, Lee (Lori) Taylor; grandchildren, Jocelyn and Jaclyn Furney, Sheryl and Frank Clark, Timmy Stone, Desi (Ambika) Taylor, Sami Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Brent Smith and Scarlott Need. He was also preceded in passing by a young daughter, Jocelyn and a brother, Tom. Ted will be laid to rest privately at Augusta Cemetery. An open house celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2020, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the New Vic Theatre, 134, E. Vine St. Kalamazoo, MI 49001.
