Shirley M. Meints, age 82 of Portage, died at home under hospice care on September 13, 2021. She was born June 21, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Everett and Alberta (Patrick) Stewart. Shirley met Mitchell "Mike" Meints at a roller-skating event and the two were married on July 19, 1958, in Kalamazoo. Shirley had worked as a Teacher's Aid for Kalamazoo Public Schools at the Upjohn School for the Handicapped and the Kennedy Center for the Handicapped. She enjoyed gardening, sports, bowling, swimming, and sewing. Above all, Shirley loved watching her family grow and felt blessed by each new child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. Her family includes her husband Mitchell "Mike" Meints; her children: Cynthia (Christopher) Anderson, Diana (Richard) DeVries, Julie (Tim) Hill, Larry Meints, and Tammy (Gary) Kiel; her grandchildren: Katie (Jeff) Dickens, Jennifer (James) McAnally, Erin (Kevin) Kokx, Phillip DeVries, Daniel (Joy) DeVries, Erica (Jay) VanderMeeden, Andrew DeVries (Holly Walker), Samantha (Kurt) Westrate, Brenda Hill, Kristina (Danny) Houser, and Michael Kiel; her great-grandchildren: Ben, Austin, and Colin Dickens, Keegan, Emma, and Kiersten Kokx, Kayla and Jason VanderMeeden, Cameron Odette, Orion DeVries, Emma Walker, William, Lucas, and Millie Westrate, and one on the way; her sister, Juanita King (Bob Switzer); her brother Lester "Bill" (Jean) Groves; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Everett Stewart and Alberta Groves and her sister Joyce Gregg. Friends may visit with her family on Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 1-2 p.m. at Grace Christian Reformed Church, 1724 Whites Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49008, where a funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Shirley may be made to Grace Christian Reformed Church.
