Shirley M. Hawkins

Shirley M. Hawkins, age 88 of Big Rapids formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at The Brook of Big Rapids. She was born in Marshall on February 9, 1936, the daughter of the late Max and Lillian (Emeringer) Robinson. Shirley graduated from Marshall High School then earned her degree as a Registered Nurse from Bronson School of Nursing. Shirley married Gerald A. Hawkins on June 6, 1959 and together they shared 50 years of marriage until he passed in 2009.

Shirley was a highly regarded Registered Nurse in the greater Kalamazoo area and retired after 35 years of nursing. She was a mentor to many in the medical field and to her family; Shirley shared her knowledge, strength, and happiness with those around her. She was also a longtime member of St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo.

Shirley is survived by her four children, Pamela (Jeffrey) Philipp of Kalamazoo, Mark (Lori-Ann) Hawkins of Chesterfield, Shelly (David) Leonhard of TN, and Kimberly (John) Horvath of Big Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Megan, Melissa (Jonn), Adam, Kendra, April, Cooper, Ryan (Bethany), Kyle, Haley, John "JD", Kayla, and Morgan; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lynda Repins of Portage; and several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son Gerald Jr. "Chip" and her brother Ronald Robinson.

A Memorial Graveside Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park South in Kalamazoo.
