Modderman, Richard E. Kalamazoo Went to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday morning April 19, 2021. Rich was born August 16, 1935 in Kalamazoo the son of Helmer and Elizabeth (Beck) Modderman. He graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 1953 where he played baseball and basketball. In 1962, he started Modderman Builders and built numerous houses in the area over the years. In 1994, he started developing the Rose Arbor Home Development which includes many beautiful homes. Rich was a longtime member of Third Christian Reformed Church where he was involved with many committees and positions. He was an avid Kalamazoo Christian sports fan and would be seen at many sporting events. He loved watching his grandsons play sports and would travel many miles to watch them play a baseball game. Rich was very involved in the community, which included Past President of the Comet Booster Club; a member of the Home Builder's Association; and volunteer and board member of Second Impressions. On April 20, 1956 he was united in marriage to his wife of 59 years, Carol (VanZanten) who preceded him in death on May 28, 2015. On November 9, 2018 Rich was united in marriage to Sandra (Gruizenga) who survives. He is also survived by his son Todd (Deb) Modderman; grandsons, Kurt (Rachel) Modderman, Nate (Katie) Modderman; great-grandchildren, Liliana, Shae, Reagan, and Grant; several step-sisters and nieces and nephews. Also surviving Rich is Sandy's family, Kurtis (Kimberly) Terpstra, Heidi Terpstra; Alexis, Seth, Cailey and McKenna Terpstra. Friends may meet the family from 4:00-7:00pm Thursday, April 22 and from 10:00-11:00am Friday, April 23 at the Third Christian Reformed Church, 2400 Winchell Ave where services will be held at 11:00am Friday. Private family interment will be in Genessee Prairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Third Christian Reformed Church, the Kalamazoo Christian Comet Booster Club, or the Leukemia Foundation.
