Mc Carthy, Patrick W. Portage Patrick William McCarthy, age 72, passed away Tuesday evening, November 3, 2020. Patrick was born July 12, 1948, in Highland Park, Michigan, to William Warren and Doris Ethel (Bolyea) McCarthy. Patrick graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit in 1966, received a BS degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree from Western Michigan University in 1979. He taught special education at the Doris Klaussen Development Center in Battle Creek for 23 years and then worked at the Men's Wearhouse in Portage for 14 years. During his employment at the Men's Wearhouse he advanced to the position of Manager of the Portage store. At the age of twelve, Pat was diagnosed with Lupus and his pediatrician informed his parents he probably would not live to be 20. Pat proved the doctor's prognosis wrong. He endured a life of medical conditions from the lupus, to congestive heart failure, cardiac arrest, and stroke. Patrick loved life and made friends with many individuals throughout his lifetime. He maintained contact with classmates from grade school and high school through the years. Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, older brother, Daniel, and younger brother, Michael. He is survived by his sister Colleen (Dan Tortal) McCarthy, niece, Kylene Tortal, nephews, Bill McCarthy and Wyatt Blum, and grandnephew Cayden Blum. He is also survived by close friend Bob Love and three special god children, Bryon Schillaci, Andrew Schillaci, and Teddy Huber. Patrick will be cremated and no memorial service is planned due to present community health conditions. Memorials may be made to St. Catherine of Siena church, 1150 West Centre Avenue, Portage, MI 49024 or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 North Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 100, Kalamazoo, MI 49007. A favorite song of Patrick's was 'Going Home" (music by Antonin Leopold Dvorak, words by William Arms Fisher) Going home going home I am going home Quiet light, some still day I am going home It's not far, just close by, through an open door Work all done, care laid by never fear no more Mother's there expecting me Father's waiting too Lots of faces gathered there All the friends I knew I'm just going home No more fear No more pain No more stumbling by the way No more longing for the day Going to run no more Morning star lights the way Restless dreams all gone Shadows gone, break of day real life has begun There's no break, there's no end Just living on Wide awake, with a smile Going on and on Going home Going home I am going home shadows gone break of day real life has begun I'm just going home To view Patrick's personalized webpage please visit https://www.langelands.com
