Mildred C. Herman, age 100, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at LindenGrove, New Berlin, WI. Mildred was born in a log cabin and raised on a farm near Lancaster, WI, September 24, 1914, daughter of the late Frank and Rosa (Nee: Pennekamp) Holzer.

In her early years Mildred graduated from Platteville State Teachers College in 1934 and 1935 and then taught at various one-room schools in Grant County for $95 a month. Needing a job during WWII, Mildred moved to Milwaukee and worked at Cutler Hammer and met Walter at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee. On November 22, 1946 at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster they were united in marriage. She then made her home with Walter in Racine. She returned to teaching in 1962 and taught for many years at St. Mary’s Grade School, ending her career at the Racine Unified School District. She was a charter and active member of the Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Columbus #697 and a member of Holy Name Church, now St. Richards. Walter preceded her in death, July 22, 1997.

Mildred’s life of 100 years were concentrated on her many family and friends, never forgetting a birthday, anniversary or special occasion with a hand-written letter or card. Her other interests included gardening, canning, reading, and crocheting.

After many illnesses and recoveries, Mildred made LindenGrove of New Berlin her home for the past four years. Many thanks go out to the staff of LindenGrove for providing a caring and supportive home for her last years of life.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann (Bruce) Curtis of New Berlin; her grandchildren, Jesse Curtis of Milwaukee, Sarah Curtis of Wauwatosa, Alissa Curtis of New Berlin. She is survived by one sister, Charlotte Hying of Platteville, many nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and many in-laws.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 27, 2015, 10:00 A.M. at St. Richard Catholic Church, 1503 Grand Avenue, with Rev. Ronald J. Gramza officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Friday at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. and Saturday at the church from 9:30 A.M. until time of Mass at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to LindenGrove Foundation 13700 W. National Ave., New Berlin, WI 53151.
