Woolley, Melvin J. Kalamazoo On Monday, December 28, 2020, Melvin Woolley went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mel was born in Moline, IL to Melvin Sr. and Irene (Peters) Woolley. After graduating from Coal Valley High School he served his country during WWII in the US Army. He was stationed at Ft. Custer where he met the love of his life, Ardith (Verhulst). They were married on June 10, 1947 and raised four children: Brenda Vander Roest (Jim), Wendy Van Elk (John), Mark Woolley (Gale), and Mary Rykse (Nathan). A faithful servant to others, Mel had a passion for people and projects. The phrase "never met a stranger" pertains to Mel. His patient nature showed whether home remodeling, bee-keeping, traveling and camping, working on a plumbing job for others, producing a beautiful organic garden, or delighting in his 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Mel also enjoyed faithfully serving many years at Fourth Reformed Church and with the Gideons. He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws (whom he loved as parents), his wife of 57 years, brothers Wayne and Leroy, sister Mary Alice, son-in-law Jim Vander Roest and infant grandson David Woolley. He is survived by his brother Robert Woolley (Pat), children, grand and great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and special friend Bonnie De Haan. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to Heritage Christian Reformed Church, Park Village Pines, or the Gideons International.
