Dr. Marvin W. Nelson, age 91, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Naples Community Hospital in Naples, FL. He was born in Madison, WI, January 17, 1925, son of the late Wilfred and Enid Nelson. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during 1943-1946 in the Specialized Training Program and also served as a Doctor and attained the rank of Captain in the United States Air Force from 1951- 1953. On July 15, 1950 he was united in marriage to Margaret “Maggie” Tobin who preceded him in death June 6, 2011.

Marvin graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degree in 1948. He served his internship at Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee, General Surgical Residency at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison, and Orthopedic Residency with the Milwaukee Orthopaedic Program. He owned his own private practice as an Orthopedic Surgeon, servicing St Mary’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s hospital from 1953 until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Wisconsin State Medical Society, Racine County Medical Society, American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Milwaukee Orthopedic Society. Marv was a member of Somerset and the Racine Country Club for over 60 yr were he was actively engaged in many aspects. He also volunteered with United Way, Boy Scouts of America, and Wustum Art Museum. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and volunteered. His passions ranged from golfing, tennis, skiing, fishing, and enjoyed painting with oil and pastels.

Survivors include his six children, Thomas (Carla) Nelson of Centennial, CO and their children, Katie (Keegan) Feeney, Tobin (Adasha) & daughter Gulzhan, and Tyler, Susan (Jack) Rodencel of Rochester, MN and their children, Lexi and Max, Jane (Brian) Penticoff of Gurnee, IL and their children, Jenna, Ellie, and Merritt, Julie Nelson of Gurnee, IL, Kristina (Steve) Wittchow of Burnsville, MN. and their children, Eric, Edward, Emma, and Evan, Timothy Nelson of Highland Ranch, CO and his children Grace, Jonathon and William; sister, Lois Duckworth of Madison, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his sisters and brother, Janet (Harry) Tople, Avys (Lee) Lemmerhirt, Earl (Ethel) Nelson; brother-in-law, Alton Duckworth and sister-in-law Patricia (Bob) Scheller.

A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated Friday, April 15, 2016, 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Avenue, with Rev. Ricardo Martin officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Thursday at the funeral home from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. and Friday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of Mass at 10:30 A.M. Private interment will be held at Holy Family Cemetery. Memorials to St. Catherine’s High School or Wheaton Franciscan Foundation have been suggested.
