Mrs. Marlene Rita Hempel, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Marlene lived a life filled with love and cherished moments, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered. Her devotion to family, passion for sports, and love for the outdoors illuminated her journey.

Born on November 27, 1939, in Racine, Wisconsin, Marlene was the eldest daughter of the late Roy and Irene Mathews. She graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in Racine, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage on July 12, 1958, to her soulmate and best friend, James Hempel. Marlene later served as a dedicated teaching assistant in the Racine United School District, where she touched the lives of countless children, especially those facing behavioral challenges.

Marlene’s enthusiasm for the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers was infectious, reflecting her deep-rooted love for sports. She found joy in camping, fishing, and golfing, often sharing these adventures with friends and family. An adept cribbage player, Marlene cherished the spirited games she shared with her mother and sister. Additionally, she proudly served as an original member of the Caledonia Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and was a faithful member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Racine, Wisconsin.

Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of over 65 years, James Hempel; her four children, Debra (Alex) Roe of Manteno, Illinois, Nicholas (Bobbi) Hempel of Racine, Wisconsin, Kristen (Ronald) Petroviak of Chester, South Carolina, and Jason (Lisa) Hempel of Racine, Wisconsin; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Ortiz of Zapata, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and Ginny McKnight, whom she loved as a daughter. In addition to her parents, Marlene was also preceded in death by her son Scott Anthony Hempel.

Visitation to be held Friday May 10th at Maresh-Meredith and Acklam funeral home, 803 Main St, Racine Wisconsin, 53403, beginning at 10:00 am with a memorial service to start at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Agape Hospice, 1069 Bayshore Dr., Rock Hill, SC 29732, in honor of the compassionate care Marlene received during her final days.
