Margaret Hughes

Hughes, Margaret L. Margaret L. Hughes, of Portage, passed away Wednesday morning, April 28, 2021. Margaret was born February 12, 1934 in Kalamazoo to the late Dan and Lena (Boven) Phillips. Margaret often spoke of the Great Depression and life growing up on the farm in Richland. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be remembered for her feisty but caring demeanor. She cared deeply for her elders and kids alike, always there to care for those in need. This could be seen in the joy she felt during the holidays, where she was able to cook large meals and be surrounded by the family she loved. Margaret also enjoyed canning and going to garage sales with her friend. Margaret was united in marriage to Ronald Hughes on November 15, 1952 who preceded her in death in 2007. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Laurie Benniks; all her brothers and sisters; and sister-in-law, Donna Oswalt. She is survived by her children, Mikel Hughes and Karen Bogen; son-in-law, Chris Benniks; three grandchildren, James (Christina) Bogen, Jacob Bogen, and Lucas Bogen; three great-grandchildren, Seth, Tyler, and Elaine Bogen; and many nieces and nephews.
