Schug, Lloyd 1/26/1936 - 3/9/2023 Climax It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lloyd Dee Schug, age 87, of Climax, Michigan, who passed away on March 9, 2023. He was born January 26, 1936, in Marcellus, Michigan to Arlo and Hazel (Shingledecker) Schug. While growing up, Lloyd participated in 4-H. He also enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, bowling, and sports. He graduated from Schoolcraft High School in 1954. He served faithfully and proudly in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1956. He married his wife, Nancy (VandeGiessen) Schug, on May 29, 1959. They had three sons and enjoyed 65 happy years together. In addition to his wife, the great loves of Lloyd's life were God, family, and farming. Farming was a significant part of Lloyd's life. In 1961, Lloyd and Nancy became farm hands on a small farm owned by Marshall and Peggy Kinney. In 1966, they began the process of purchasing the farm from the Kinneys and established Schug Farms. He was proud to be one of the first in the state of Michigan with a hog confinement operation and to be a leading member of the Michigan Pork Producers Association and Michigan Pork Council. He was a proud long-time member of the Newcombers Group of the Kalamazoo County Farm Bureau. Lloyd built Schug Farms into what it is today through years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. His two sons joined in the partnership and are continuing his legacy of farming to this day. Lloyd and Nancy spent many happy years traveling the country on his Goldwing motorcycle as part of the Cereal City Goldwing Group. They visited 47 states and 6 provinces of Canada together on the Goldwing. They also spent 26 winters in Florida where they made many special friends and numerous memories of family visiting and time spent enjoying retirement. Lloyd also enjoyed driving his Model A "John Deere" Truck around town and to church, and he participated in many local parades with grandkids and great grandkids. He spent lots of his free time at the family pond, one of his favorite places. On a daily basis, he could be seen driving his Bobcat "Buggy" to the farm and around his property. He always stopped to chat and visit with any friends, family, or those just passing through. Lloyd was a cultivator of relationships and always intentionally made everyone feel loved, seen, and valued. Lloyd is survived by his wife Nancy; his sons Michael Schug (Vicky) and Dennis Schug (Brenda); grandchildren Lindsey Sims (Randy), Cory Schug (Sarah), Darin Schug (Christina), and Mallory Schug (Jeremy); and five great-grandchildren (one additional on the way). Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, Arlo and Hazel Schug; his sister, DeMaris Holmes, and his son Russell Schug. Visitation will be held at the Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 11:00 am 1:00 pm with the funeral service immediately following at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jon Zondervan officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Radiant Church in Richland, MI 49083, Gun Lake Community Church in Wayland, MI 49348 or the charity of ones choice.
