Obituary
John Floyd Wonser, age 90 of Kalamazoo, peacefully left this earth to join his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 2, 2026. John was born on January 16, 1936, in Battle Creek, MI, the son of Floyd and Edna (Baker) Wonser. The family lived in Wapakoneta, OH, for a few years before settling in Battle Creek, MI. From the age of 10, John was raised by Floyd and his step-mother, Margaret Wonser. He was a graduate of The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor, MI, where he played on the football team and ran track. He received his Bachelor's degree in business from the University of Michigan. John joined the U.S. Navy and after graduating from officer training school, he earned the rank of supply officer on a naval destroyer. On February 5, 1959, he married Margaret "Meg" Morang in Athens, Georgia.
Upon honorable discharge from the Navy in 1962, John joined Booz, Allen, & Hamilton as a consultant. John's role as a consultant and related roles lasted until 1973, when he chose to embrace business ownership. For 35 years, John owned and operated Floyd Wonser Enterprises until his retirement. John was an active member of Community Presbyterian Church and loved his church family. Family, church, and work were a focus for John, but he also engaged in several hobbies. He enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, and flying prop planes. John will always be known for his sense of humor, often the dry and sarcastic brand which sometimes left the victim wondering if he was serious. John's pride for the USA drew him to read in-depth historical accounts of her wars, finance, politics, and business. He thoroughly enjoyed engaging in these topics when in social settings.
John is survived by his wife Meg Wonser; his children: Elizabeth (Walter) Betz, Sarah (David) Madiol, Jeffrey (Nancy) Wonser; his grandchildren: Nathaniel Betz, Bourke Betz, Adrianna Betz, Grace Betz, Isaac Betz, Gwendolyn Betz, Brock Barron, Alexandria Wonser, Julianne Wonser, & Parker Wonser; his younger sibling Gertrude Wonser, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Edna, his older sister, Ruth Betty Renton, and step-brother, John Beck. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 12:30 PM, at Community Presbyterian Church, 811 Gorham Lane, Kalamazoo, MI, 49006. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Community Presbyterian Church at the aforementioned address.
