HOEKSTRA - Jean Hoekstra, age 87, of Grand Rapids, was ushered peacefully into heaven on March 16, 2010 after a long and disabling battle with arthritis. Born on her family's farm in Rockford, Ohio, she spent the major share of her life in Grand Rapids. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Phillip Hoekstra; her son, Dennis (Susan) Potter; two grandsons, Chris (Sue) and daughters Kayla and Brenna; and Jeff (Susan) and children Taylor, Jacob and Dylan; all of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are her stepchildren, including Gail (Doug) Siebeck and children Lucas (Lara), Maisha, Marcus, Jordana and Jember; Keith (Margaret) and son Jacob; Steve and sons Tylor and Stuart; and daughter-in-law Laura Hoekstra-Betting and daughter Betsy; and Jean's brother, Robert (Barbara) High, of Ohio. Jean's two sisters, Dorothy Bollenbacher and Margaret Post, preceded her in death, as did her stepson Robert Hoekstra. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and many dear friends, especially Marjory and Norman Tubbs. Jean worked as a bookkeeper and office manager in years past. She worked for many years at various volunteer activities, including the Butterworth Hospital Junior Diet Guild, the Littlefair Guild at Fountain Street Church and Hospice. She was an accomplished bridge player and loved traveling, reading, knitting, and doing crossword puzzles. Jean was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church and the Priscilla Guild. The family wishes to express many thanks to the staff at Pilgrim's Manor for the excellent, kind and gracious care of Jean during her prolonged stay. At her request, cremation has already taken place. Visitation will be held on March 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Mayflower Congregational Church. Her memorial service will be held at Mayflower Congregational Church on March 21 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Michigan or to the Pilgrim Manor Foundation will be greatly appreciated.
