Jane VerMerlen Buter, 88, died March 6, 2018 in St. Louis, MO. Jane was born January 24, 1930 in Grand Rapids, MI. She graduated from Central High School in 1948 and went on to Hope College before transferring to the National College of Education in Evanston, IL, graduating in 1952 with a BA in Education. She went on to an extensive career teaching in early elementary education in both the Grand Rapids Public School system and the Kalamazoo Public Schools. Her superiors routinely placed "problem children" in her classrooms due to her ability to effectively work with them and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Willard and Mrs. Wilma VerMeulen, as well as her husband, Harold J. "Herk" Buter. She is survived by her children, Dr. Deborah Wadsworth of St. Louis, MO, and John W. Timmons of Alexandria, VA, three grandchildren, Jane Kathryn "Katy" Wadsworth Bryant of Denver, CO, Mollie R. Timmons of Washington, D.C. and Hannah J. Timmons of Ann Arbor, MI. and a step-son, Harold "Jon" Buter of Savannah, GA. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters, Ruth Campbell of Knoxville, TN and Mary Ross of Medinah, IL and numerous nieces and nephews of whom she was quite fond. It was her desire that any memorials be sent to Addie's Pantry run by Central Reformed Church, 10 College NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. A commemoration of life will be held later this year.
