James (Jim) Stewart Fletcher, age 87, died peacefully November, 20 2016 in Lillian, Alabama. Dearly loved husband of Joan Fletcher and father of Dennis, Pamela, Bryon, Sandy (Mount) and Doug. Proud grandfather of Matthew, Kendi (Fletcher-Courtney), Eric, Ryan, Jessica and Zoe and great-grandfather to Grayson. James was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Fletcher and his brothers Don and Arthur and survived by his youngest brother Bill. Born in Dearborn, Michigan he grew up in Concord, MI. Jim met his wife of 65 years in Jackson, MI where they resided and raised their children. After retiring from Consumers Power Jim and Joan moved to Perdido Key, FL where they managed the Sundown Condominiums for several years across the street from longtime friends Bill and Blythe Cowan. Retiring to Lillian, AL he was never one to be idle. He faithfully fed wild birds and squirrels, was an avid gardener, always had a project going or in the works and frequently cursed the armadillos and skunks that attacked his plants. An artist at heart he was an avid photographer for many years, documenting the lives of his family and their activities. A big hockey fan Jim watched the Red Wings almost every year and was prepared for another mediocre season and always hoping for the best. He loved to surf fish on Perdido Key, and to the end had hoped to get out for one last cast on the beach. Three days before he was hospitalized Jim picked out a rescue dog and named him Pepper. Although he did not get much time with Pepper, it has given those left behind a reminder of his compassion. He was a man who helped others above himself, a man with a great sense of humor, a man with great love for his wife and family and a man who is dearly missed. Jim was a lifetime member of the Free and Accepted Masons in both Jackson, MI and Napoleon, MI, and served his country in the Army and Navy during the Korean War. No services are currently planned.
