Age 94. Jack passed away on February 13, 2018 in Clarkston, Michigan in the loving care of his wife, daughter and Hospice Care. He was born on November 28, 1923 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, son of Harold A. and Prudie A. Cleveland. Jack married the former Joyce "Joy" Elaine Sweet. Jack and Joyce celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in April of 2017 and were each other's best friends. They married on April 19, 1947 after Jack was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, a veteran of WWII. Jack was passionate about flying and had his own airplane at one time. Jack was an educator, a teacher, a principal and assistant superintendent of schools in River Rouge, MI. Jack received his Doctorate in Education from Wayne State University. He retired from Goodrich School District as principal. He and Joyce enjoyed many years together and spent approximately 25 years at a retirement park in Sun City, AZ. They loved to travel cross country and particularly remember their trips to Branson, Missouri, Vancouver, British Columbia and Calgary. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Patricia Clark; his grandparents; and a grandson, Nathan. He leaves to cherish his memory, Gregory (Gwendolynne) Cleveland of Sanford, Michigan, Judy (Jerry) Hyslop of Clarkston, Michigan; Cheryl (Bruce) Eddy of Peoria, Arizona; Grandchildren, Jason, Aaron, Christopher, Shawn, Sophia, Elka, Johnnie Lee, as well as several great grandchildren, Grace, Jack, Sehven, Jonathan, Tahlia, Xander, Rain, Teghan, Jamie, Isaiah, Abby, Avery and Elisha. He also leaves behind his sisters, Marjorie Sheppard and Norma Bos. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 at Grace Harbor Church located 811 Gorham Lane in Kalamazoo, followed by a graveside service with full military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 12 p.m. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to arrive at the cortege area by 11:45 p.m. Following the graveside service, friends and family are invited back to the church for a luncheon in Jack's memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Harbor Church, c/o of the funeral home.
