Rosema, Hubert "Cal" 9/3/1932 - 4/3/2022 Kalamazoo Career public servant and law enforcement professional and educator, Cal Rosema, left to fulfill his faith in God and got his call from Heaven after a short battle with cancer on Sunday April 3rd in Kalamazoo, MI. He was blessed to pass at home with family present. He was born September 3, 1932, the son of the late Harm H. and Dena (Poll) Rosema and was the youngest of five brothers and sisters. Focused on a career of keeping others safe, his priority was always first with his wife of 66 years Carol Rosema (Hendrych), daughters Penny (Bob) Chaloupka and Lori (Dean) Weurding, and son Brian (Dana) Rosema; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren all residing in Southwest Michigan. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. A man of great patriotism and dedication to country and family was evident in a long and impressive list of both personal and professional accomplishments. After serving during the Korean War with the US Army, Cal retired as a Lieutenant after 25 years of service in the Michigan State Police, thereafter being elected to four terms and serving sixteen years as Sheriff of Van Buren County. Cal received numerous awards, including the very first Trooper of the Year Award from the MSP, and the American Senators Award from the American Jaycees. Cal was also a member of the American Legion, Trinity Lutheran Church in Paw Paw and the Fraternal Order of Police. During his career, Cal attended the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, and Northwestern University. He was a professor at Western Michigan University, Lake Michigan Community College and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, teaching courses in law enforcement. He was deeply committed and an active member of the Van Buran County Republican Party. He was also known as a strong public speaker and provided inspirational speeches at events such as graduations, civic events and eulogies throughout Michigan. Cal will be remembered for his love of fishing Lake Michigan, hunting, watching his family grow, attending the endless number of sporting events of his children and grandchildren, traveling with his soulmate Carol, and his simple and deep appreciation of God, family, and life. A Memorial Gathering will take place on Saturday, April 16, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services 3926 S 9th St. Kalamazoo, MI 49009. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church 721 Pine St. Paw Paw, MI 49079 with visitation beginning at 11:00 am and a service to follow at 12:00 pm. Inurnment will take place privately at Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to Centrica Care Navigators, the Paw Paw Fire Department or Trinity Lutheran Church of Paw Paw, in memory of Cal.
