Age 89, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 4, 2018. Gene was a descendent of Isadore and Fern (Lucas) Schuck. Gene was born in Muncie, IN on March 22, 1929, where he graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1947 and Ball State University in 1951. Gene then served in the army artillery from 1951 to 1954, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He served in Korea from 1952 to 1954 and was awarded the Bronze Star. After being discharged, he received his Masters in Music Education in 1958. He served as a music teacher in Knox, IN from 1954 to 1957 and Kalamazoo, MI, from 1957 to his retirement in 1984. He dearly loved children and enjoyed teaching them. He continued to substitute teach until 1993. He was a member of the Gideons for over 30 years and was deeply involved in their ministry of distributing God's Word. The Gideon motto Isaiah 55:11, "So shall my word be that goes out of my mouth; it shall not return unto me voice, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and prosper in the things for which I sent it" was his favorite verse. Gene taught Sunday School, was a youth counselor and a choir director for several churches. He was an essential part of establishing the Center Avenue Community Church in Portage, MI. He was preceded in death by his wife Emogene McIntyre Schuck and eight siblings. He is survived by his children, Tom Schuck, David Schuck, Jonathan Schuck, Darlene Stover, and Nathan (Lydia) Schuck; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held at Joldersma & Klein Funeral Home on Friday, May 11, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Wenke officiating. Private interment will occur at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 10, 2018, from 5:00 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, c/o the funeral home.
