Gail K. Winter passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the age of 80. After dealing with failing health for several years, Gail was diagnosed with heart failure in January. She was hospitalized briefly in early May, and died peacefully in her home, surrounded by people she loved.

Gail graduated with honors from Carthage College while raising her four children. She taught in the Racine Unified School District for 30 years, and was a strong believer in the importance of organized labor to provide teachers with the ability to provide a quality education to students. Many underprivileged and learning disabled children in Racine owe their ability to read and function in society to Mrs. Winter. She delighted many a former student by remembering their name when she saw them on the street. After her retirement, she volunteered for many years at Gifford Elementary School in Racine.

Gail traveled extensively throughout North America, frequently in the company of her friends, aka "the usual suspects." She was a strong supporter of progressive politics, social justice, and animal rights. Gail was an avid reader, and a well-informed and highly opinionated commentator on current events. She was also a devoted sports fan, cheering for the Packers and her beloved Cubs.

Gail is survived by her four children, whom she considered her best friends, and their families: Anthony Winter of Racine, WI (Tessa, J.D. and Ivy Leilani); Dianne Winter Brookins of Kaneohe, HI (Jessica); Susan and Brian Page of Kenosha, WI (Alexander and Miranda); and Julie Winter of Brisbane, Australia. Gail's 'Ohana included Kasey Anderson, who was her "fifth child" and a tremendous support during her later years.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church, 625 College Avenue in Racine. Visitation with the family will be from 5-6 pm, with the service at 6 pm. Gail was a member of Christ Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyterians in Kailua, HI. Her ashes will be scattered in Waimanalo, HI at a future date.
