Dorothy Cookingham

Cookingham, Dorothy Kalamazoo It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of our Mom , Dorothy Janet Cookingham (Root) on May 23, 2022 . Born the second eldest child of seven, on August 7, 1936 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Clarence and Helen (Ames) Root. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School Class of 1954 where she loved being a majorette with the band all 3 years. Dorothy was married to her childhood sweetheart, John Wesley (Wes) Cookingham, Sr. for 62 years. They spent 35 years living in South Florida. Dorothy had many professional interests, worked in banking, various secretarial positions throughout her life, also attended cosmetology school. The best years of her life were spent with family and friends. Blessed with three children all raised in Portage. Sheree (Jay) Broussard, Rockford, MI, John, Jr. (Nancy) Cookingham, Spring Lake, MI, and Susan (Matt) Marshall, Lake Mary, FL, one granddaughter, Lynzee (Broussard), White (Chris), Mattawan, MI and 2 great grandchildren Michael and Izabella White, also, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins whom she adored. She is survived by the following siblings; Marge Rees, Norman (Sharron) Root, Barbara Bertrand, Janice Barbaro, and Deb (Mike) DeMarco. She was preceded in death by her husband, our father in 2016, her parents, and her brother Clarence "Bernie" Root, Jr. A private graveside service is being planned.
