Obituary
David Dyer Hunting Jr., aged 81, died Tuesday, July 10. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Coe Hunting; two brothers, Allen Ives (Helen) and John Robert; and two daughters, Catherine Hunting Osborne (James) and Mary Anne Hunting (Thomas Remien). He has five grandchildren, Matthew David, Kate Marie, and Thomas James Osborne and Henry David and Mary Ives Remien. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, after graduating from the Culver Military Academy in 1944 he joined the V-12 Unit of the U.S. Navy, and in 1948 obtained his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Michigan. He then joined Steelcase Inc. as a sales trainee and held various positions culminating in 1968 as president of Attwood Corporation - a subsidiary of Steelcase. In 1981 he was named senior (later executive) vice president for subsidiary operations, including Steelcase Canada, Ltd, and Vecta Corporation as well as the North Carolina and California divisions. Although he retired in 1989, he remained on the board of directors of Steelcase until 2002 but continued to serve on the board of the Steelcase Foundation. His local philanthropic commitments were numerous, including chairman of Blodgett Hospital (now part of Spectrum Health), Visiting Nurses Association, Heart of West Michigan United Way, Grand Rapids Youth Commonwealth, the University of Michigan, and the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church on the corner of Hall and Plymouth Streets.
