Died Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at home after a wood cutting accident. He was born in Davenport, Iowa. He married Margaret (Peggy) Meyer on June 11, 1971, in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. Conrad was a 1965 graduate of St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 from Albion College, Albion, Michigan, with a major in Political Science. He received a Juris Doctor degree on January 18, 1976 from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. Conrad's career began as a patrolman with the Albion Police Department, ultimately rising to the position of detective. After law school, he joined the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office as an assistant prosecutor. He became Chief Assistant Prosecutor and then ran for and was elected County Prosecutor in 1980. He held that office until 1990, when he ran for and was elected Circuit Court Judge. He served as judge until his retirement in 2015. During his time as judge, he served twice as Chief Judge, holding that position at his retirement. He was involved in various organizations, including serving on the boards of Safe Place and Charitable Union, and was a member of the Michigan Bar Association and the Calhoun County Bar Association. Conrad especially enjoyed helping a bit with Albion College and with the Michigan Innocence Clinic at The University of Michigan. Conrad loved animals and birdwatching and being outdoors, and was an avid horseman, showing for several years on the American Quarter Horse circuit. He loved trail riding and had several times taken horses out west to ride in the mountains. He was deeply interested in Native American cultures and took numerous trips to the southwest to hike, camp, and explore archaeological sites. He always enjoyed being with his dogs, who were his constant companions. He was an accomplished carpenter and with his wife, built their home, garage, and most of their barns. In retirement, he had learned blacksmithing and welding and enjoyed repairing equipment and building things, including several pieces of furniture. He also enjoyed doing maintenance of his home and property. Conrad is survived by Peggy, his wife of nearly 49 years, his sisters Carol (Charles) Simonian of Columbus, Ohio, and Ann (Thomas) Goebel of Ashland, Virginia, sister-in-law Mary Sindt of Bettendorf, Iowa, numerous nephews and nieces, in-laws Philip and Gloria Meyer of Holland, Michigan, and their children and Douglas Meyer of New York, New York, and eight beloved horses and two cherished dogs. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard T. and Beatrice (Bauch) Sindt and his brother Robert Sindt. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 28, 2020 at 2:30PM at Goodrich Chapel of Albion College, 201 N. Ingham Street, Albion, Michigan 49224 with visitation starting one hour prior to the service.
