Charles Allan Slocum, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Martin, on September 29, 2017. Charles was born on 12/11/1929 to Charles and E. Marie (Caliman) Slocum, in Lawrence, MI. Charles joined the service directly out of high school and served in the Army and the Marines, before going to St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh, NC. Charles graduated with a physical education degree in 1951. Following college, He joined the Air Force and served in Korea from 1951-1955 when he received an Honorable discharge.

In the summer of 1965 Charles met Patricia Latzo and married her on October 8, 1965. They moved to California where they lived happily. Charles worked as a civilian at the Long Beach Naval Shipyards. They added a son, David Allan, in 1968 and a daughter, Andrea (Andie) Marie in 1973. In 1991, Charles retired from the Naval Shipyards, and they moved to Martin, Michigan. In Michigan, Charles worked for Harold Ziegler’s in Kalamazoo, and served as a Martin Village Trustee. Charles and Patricia spent 43 years together before she passed in 2008.

Charles lived in Kalamazoo, MI for a time before returning to Martin in August of 2017 and joining Doris Hawkey, Letty and Jason Sherry, where Letty was his caregiver to the end.

Charles passed peacefully in his sleep, and is survived by his son David, Woodland Hills, CA, his daughter Andrea (Kelli), New Orleans, LA, two sisters-in-law’s Doris Hawkey of Martin, MI, and Joyce Slocum of Kalamazoo, MI, Nieces Letty Sherry, Debbie Lynn & Tina Cornwell, Nephew Bill Foote, and many great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother, Boyd (Bud) Slocum.

Burial will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, in Battle Creek, on Friday, October 6th at 10:30am, Memorial Services will be at Martin United Methodist Church, 969 E. Allegan in Martin at 11:00am on Saturday, October 7th.
