Byron Newell

Byron W. Newell, age 96, of Ludington, MI and formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away Wed. Dec. 14, 2016 in Ludington Woods in Ludington. Byron was born Jan. 8, 1920 in Decatur, the son of Oscar and Bess (Taylor) Newell Sr. He served in the US Navy in WWII. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan State University and was employed by the Upjohn Co. in Kalamazoo for 38 years as a Personnel Manager. He married Loretta Mahoney May 26, 1945 and she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Iris Ives McWilliams, Betty Jane Cross and a brother H. Wesley Newell. Survivors include a daughter Barb (Dennis) Erickson of Ludington, a son Craig (Ann) Newell of Okemos, MI, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, a sister Beverly Govier of New York, a brother Oscar (Topper) Newell Jr. of Decatur and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Sat., Dec. 17, 2016 in the Newell Funeral Home Decatur with James Abshagen officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery Decatur.
