Betty was an excellent athlete who played fast pitch softball on a women's team that won state championships in the 1940's. She was an avid bowler and also enjoyed playing golf. She worked on her father's celery farm growing up and later in her family's bedding plant business. She also enjoyed following her grandkids exploits in sports and loved watching the Detroit Tigers. On August 27, 1948 she was united in marriage to her loving husband of nearly 73 years, John Schaap, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Donald (Janice) Schaap, Carol (Bert) DeYoung, Mary Buckmaster, Linda (James) VanSweden, Joy (Lee) Schaap-Farmer; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Denis Buckmaster; and 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, August 21 at Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Rd with Pastor Fred DeYoung officiating. Friends may meet the family from 10:00-11:00am Saturday at the church prior to the service. A light reception will follow the service and interment will be in Comstock Cemetery.
