Barbara’s spirit left this earthly life on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in Racine, WI, which had been her home since 1961. Born November 23, 1927 in Evansville, WI, the child of Lester L. Thompson and Charlotte C. (Nee: Gurnee) Thompson.

Barbara’s early education was accomplished in Evansville, with high school graduation from Evansville High School. She then attended Milwaukee Downer and Madison College. She earned a Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

After nearly ten years of employment with AAA of Wisconsin, she began her career as an educator in 1961 with Racine Unified School District at McKinley Junior High. Barbara left teaching in 1982 to attend Lutheran School of Theology. In 1984, she returned to RUSD and spent four years as the “school to work” coordinator at Park High School.

Barbara was an avid bird watcher, a lover of nature and supporter of numerous organizations which work to protect our earth and her animals. She was an active social justice advocate. An Associate of the Racine Dominican Sisters, she was particularly supportive of their Eco-Justice Center, Hope Center and Retreat Program.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Evelyn Thompson of Evansville; nieces, Linda (Donald) Cornwell of Oregon, WI and Nancy (Robert) Chritton of Stoughton, WI; grandnephew, Matthew (Karen) Cornwell and daughter, Clara, of DeForest, WI; and grandniece, Jennifer (Michael) Wokasch and children, Owen and LIsette of Oregon, WI. Her beloved brother, Donald Thompson and nephew, Gary Thompson of Evansville, WI, predeceased Barbara.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memory, the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates, her many colleagues in education and social justice, and countless loyal and loving friends and caregivers.
