Art, age 102, died peacefully Friday evening, January 3, 2020 at his residence with many loving family members at his side. Art, the son of Seth J. and Lenna C. (Brooks) Standley, was born in Augusta, MI on May 29, 1917 and was a lifetime resident. His first love was being a farmer, whether share cropping or raising cows, goats and sheep. While Art was farming full time, he was also employed by Clark Equipment as a welder, then transferred to the Experimental Department before retiring in 1975 after 35 years of faithful service. After retirement, he was a bus driver for the Gull Lake Community Schools. Art was a long time member of the Urbandale Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Battle Creek. Art instilled a strong work ethic in his family. Everyone was welcomed at his dinner table and his house was open for people to stay. Art loved to fish with Dave and the grandkids and eat whatever they caught. He was a Detroit Tiger fan no matter what type of team they were fielding and always enjoyed a good football game. You could find him at many a farm auction, but his true passion in life was his family, especially the grandkids! Art was united in marriage to the former, Hazel Edmonds Newkirk on May 11, 1940 in Bedford Township and she sadly preceded him in death on October 1, 1999. Surviving is a daughter, Judy K. (Charles) Bradley of Augusta; two sons, James (Janice) Standley of Climax, MI and John (MariLee) Standley of LaFayette, GA; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Carnell of Augusta and his brother, Robert Standley of Augusta. Art was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Blanche Rice and Verna Chittick; a brother, Albert Standley and a great granddaughter, Trecia Standley. The Funeral Service to celebrate Art's life will be held on Thursday, January 9th at 1:00 p.m. in the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Augusta Chapel, 307 N. Webster Street, with the Rev. Jerryn Schmidt, Pastor of the Urbandale Seventh-Day Adventist Church, officiating. Art's family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Private, Family interment will be in Day Cemetery, Ross Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Art's honor may be directed to Urbandale Seventh-Day Adventist Church-Pavement Fund; the Quiet Hour Ministries or Southern Care: Kindred Hospice Services.
