Claude S. Phillips, Jr., died April 17, 2014. Born April 1, 1923 and raised in the coal mining region of West Virginia, he attended the University of Tennessee and then Duke University to attain his Ph.D. in Political Science and was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1957, he joined the faculty of Western Michigan University where he remained until retiring in 1990 as Professor Emeritus. His many accomplishments include founding director of the Institute of International and Area Studies and of a new degree in political science, the Master of Development Administration. He directed a Peace Corps training program for Nigeria in 1965 and helped develop new programs in African Studies and Non-Western World, and won the University's Distinguished Service Award. His studies abroad include a Fulbright Grant to India and later a University Grant to Nigeria, 1960-1961, 1978-1979, and 1981. His research abroad resulted in two original books on Nigeria and Africa, seven original chapters in books on developing areas and 25 journal articles, and two fiction novels. Dr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Hal (Patrice); daughter, Teresa (Robert) Chau; step-daughter, Karen (Don Haack) Smith, and stepson, Mark (Geralyn) Smith. He is also survived by two sisters, Deane Shelton and Patricia (William) Simmons. Other survivors include nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
