Passed away suddenly on August 1, 2007. Louis was born November 7, 1925 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a son of Charles E. and Edna (Early) Berner. He was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. While in school, he met Fern Victoria Smith and they were married on September 15, 1944. He joined the U.S. Navy on January 21, 1944 and served on the USS Dewey and was honorably discharged on January 17, 1946. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked at Kalasign. He left there to do an apprenticeship in watchmaking at Paul E. Morrison Jewelers, where he also worked for 19 years. He then opened his own watch and clock shop and worked there until he retired in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son and daughter-in-law, Louis (Agne) Berner. Louis enjoyed traveling, fishing, bowling and golfing with his longtime friends. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His sense of humor and that twinkle in his eye will be missed by all who loved him. During his marriage, Lou and Fern had three children, Louis (Agne) Berner, Jr., Charlotte (Phillip) Weiss of Richland, and Daniel (Sue) Berner of Lafayette, IN. He had eight grandchildren, Kimberly Weiss, Marcia (Scott) Poole, Heidi Weiss, Meghan, Joseph, and Holen Berner, and Marius and Erik Berner. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Lauren and Nolan Padley and Andrew and Justin Poole; a brother, Jack E. Berner; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held 10:30 Monday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be directed to the West Michigan Cancer Center or the Michigan Heart Fund. 269-343-1508.
