Reinard VanOosterum

Reinard VanOosterum, age 93, of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on Tuesday afternoon, January 20, 2015 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born on March 25, 1921 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late John and Winnie (Smid) VanOosterum. Reinard was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps serving during World War II. On September 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lena Weststrate. Reinard was employed by Consumers Power (now Consumers Energy) for over 35 years until his retirement. He also volunteered for AARP for 35 years assisting people with their tax returns. He was a longtime member of Comstock Christian Reformed Church. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Lena VanOosterum; two children, Robert VanOosterum of Kalamazoo and Linda (Bruce) Prince of Portage; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was a son, Reinard "Sparky" VanOosterum Jr. and four brothers, Richard, Wayne, Jacob and Jerry VanOosterum of Kalamazoo. Funeral services for Reinard will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, Jan. 26, at Comstock Christian Reformed Church, 5300 Comstock Avenue, with Rev. Ben Hulst officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 PM on Sunday afternoon at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street. Private interment will be in Comstock Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Kalamazoo Christian School Association or Comstock Christian Reformed Church.
