Walter A. Robison, M.D., affectionately known to generations of family, friends, colleagues, and patients as "Doc," passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the age of 87.

Born on September 20, 1938, Doc lived a life defined by service, curiosity, adventure, and an unwavering love for people. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1963 with a degree in General Practice and went on to devote more than four decades to caring for the people of Kalamazoo. He spent 25 years practicing emergency medicine at both Borgess and Bronson Hospitals and more than 45 years as a primary care physician. His patients knew they could count on him, because Doc never turned anyone away.

Reflecting on his career, he once said, "I am proud to have gone to U of M Medical School. I have had a profession which has brought me great joy and fun. I love what I do!"

And when asked if he would do it all over again, his answer was immediate: "Yes! I would go to medical school. I would play more and work less!"

In addition to his medical career, Doc proudly served his country as a Battalion Surgeon in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966, stationed in Friedberg, Germany.

But medicine was only one chapter in a life that was lived fully. Doc played basketball from the age of eight until he was 72 years old. He loved buying and selling import cars, boating, fishing, family ski trips to Aspen, and traveling throughout Europe. He possessed a lifelong fascination with language and enthusiastically studied both German and Spanish. He had an insatiable curiosity and a gift for conversation that allowed him to make friends wherever he went and with people from every walk of life.

Among the many relationships he treasured, none meant more to him than those with his family. He shared a particularly close bond with his beloved son, Steven Robison, who passed away unexpectedly in 2021. He found tremendous joy in spending time with his grandson, Aidan Robison, with whom he shared countless adventures and memories that will be cherished forever.

Doc is survived by his grandson, Aidan Robison; his sisters, Connie and Darlene; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends including his girlfriend Suzy. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Robison; his parents, Stanley and Ruthie Robison; and his sisters, Diane and Cynthia.

Doc was loved by many, and the stories about him are endless. He was one of a kind-a colorful character, a devoted physician, a loyal friend, and a man who embraced life with enthusiasm and humor. There was no one quite like him.

His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled.

Well done, Doc. Thank you for the stories, the laughs, the adventures, and the lives you touched. You will be missed more than words can say.
