Virginia Mae Yancey, age 97, of Kalamazoo passed away peacefully on Monday evening, March 14, 2022. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on April 30, 1924, the loving daughter of Simon Henry and Emma Margaret (Hoelscher) Hager. Virginia served as a seamstress at Fort Leonard Wood during WWII and then worked at Oberman & Company in Jefferson City. Virginia married Willie Frances Yancey in Jackson, Michigan on April 25, 1953; he sadly preceded her in death on April 8, 2005. She is survived by her children, Mark (Roseanne) Yancey of Richland, MI, Karen (Louis) Burns of Granite Bay, CA, and Brenda Taber of Cranberry Twp., PA; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Virginia was a homemaker who loved and excelled at sewing, cooking, gardening, and canning. She was known to some as "Ms. Pickle" and was the first one at a neighbor's door with a cake to welcome them, or to console them when family tragedies occurred. She spent nine of her final years living near her oldest daughter in California and her last seven years living near her son in Michigan. We wish to thank the entire staff of Friendship Village where she recently lived, especially those of the Health Center who provided her care over the last three years. The family will receive friends 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at St. Peter's Catholic Church 216 Broadway St. Jefferson City, MO 65101 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Jefferson City. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Health Care Activities Department at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo or to Centrica Care Navigators (Hospice) would be appreciated as these brought her great comfort. Arrangements by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
