Virginia Lee Stone, a resident of Burlington, VT passed away peacefully October 20, 2021 in Jericho, VT with her youngest son Jeffrey by her side. Born on September 20th, 1932 in Casco Township, Michigan to Lee and Flora Galbreath, Virginia was the oldest of three children. In 1956 Virginia married Jerry Erle Stone in Fennville, Michigan. Shortly after marriage they moved to Berkley, Michigan where they raised their three children. In 1985 Virginia and Jerry relocated to Crested Butte, Colorado to enjoy the Rocky Mountains until 2009 when they moved to Burlington, VT to be closer to family and lakeside living. Virginia attended Western Michigan University between 1950 and 1955 while also teaching grade school during this time period. She remained a strong advocate for education throughout her life, actively participating in teaching many of her grandchildren to read and write while remaining a voracious reader herself. Her beautiful penmanship that she maintained from her teaching days will be a fond memory that will continue to bring a smile to the faces of her children and grandchildren. Growing up in Western Michigan, Virginia gained a great appreciation for the natural world from her parents and passed that on to her children. We will fondly remember her love of the outdoors and keen knowledge of wildflowers and fungi while on hikes and walks throughout the various regions she lived. She especially loved sitting on the deck and enjoying the evening sunset over the lake, whether that was on the lakes in Northern Michigan or in Burlington with their spectacular view of Lake Champlain. Virginia was also a strong supporter of local arts, supporting the Flynn Theater in Burlington and the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado. In addition to these interests, Virginia was an avid sports fan. She loved baseball and ice hockey in her early years and enjoyed watching football later in life. Virginia was predeceased by her parents Lee and Flora Galbreath, her husband Jerry Erle Stone, and their daughter Lynnette Sinacola. She is survived by her brother Rod Galbreath of Adrian, MI, and sister Sally McKellips of Fennville, MI. Virginia is also survived by two sons Gary (Becky) and Jeffrey (Heather); eight grandchildren, Michelle, Julie, James, Leigh, Yuri, Cooper, Noah and Aidan; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Charlee, Michael, Everlee, Bay, Oliver, Macklyn, Scout, James, Sheppard, Lucia, Poppy, Jade and Shyanne. Gary and Jeffrey would like to thank and acknowledge the tremendous skill, care and compassion of the Chittenden County Hospice team that cared for Virginia. Virginia would comment often on how great each and every one of the caretakers were. In addition, we'd like to express our deep appreciation for Heather, Noah and Aiden's extra care, love and support throughout the Hospice process. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be given to the Chittenden County Vermont Hospice through the University of Vermont Home Health & Hospice (https://www.uvmhomehealth.org/donations/make-an-online-donation/) or the Crested Butte Land Trust (https://www.cblandtrust.org/)
