Bode, Thomas 5/12/1949 - 2/16/2023 San Angelo Tom Bode, 73, passed away on February 16 in San Angelo, Texas. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of the late Patti and George Bode. Bode is survived by his loving sisters, Jill Bode Goldweitz and Margaret (Meg) Bode D'Ariano, nephews Daniel Goldweitz and David Goldweitz, nieces Lily D'Ariano and Grace D'Ariano; and his aunt Phyllis LaVene of Richland, MI as well as cousins Nancy Zarnow, Fred Sofen and Greg Sofen. Bode was a graduate of Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo and Michigan State University. At MSU Tom was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Tom was onto something in his last two decades of life. Following a stroke in his early fifties, he decided to simplify his life and moved from New York to the wider spaces of Montana and later to Texas. In both places, he loved the landscapes and rural life. He thought these embodied the most authentic part of American life. Earlier, he had worked as a cell tower placement contractor, and so had helped implement the very communications revolution that he later worried was not altogether beneficial to human well-being. In Miles and Ballinger, Texas, Tom had many friends and was well-known in many establishments including Toliver Brothers. He was an avid reader and a frequent visitor at the Carnegie Library of Ballinger. He especially loved and volunteered at the renowned Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, the largest equine rescue facility in the world. An area of the farm dedicated to special needs donkeys will be named in his honor. Donations in his memory can be sent to the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue at PO Box 216, Miles, TX 76861.
