Susan Barnes

Susan K. Barnes, age 65 of Portage and formerly of Battle Creek, unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday evening, May 26, 2026. She was born in Battle Creek on April 29, 1961, the daughter of Cecil and Madaline (Herrmann) Barnes. Sue graduated from Battle Creek Central High School with the Class of 1979 and continued her education at Western Michigan University, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education. She served for many years as General Manager for the Latitude 42 Brewing Company in Portage, and had previously managed the Moors Golf Club and many other area restaurants. Sue enjoyed going to many different casinos, taking family cruises, lying next to the pool with a book, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Sue is survived by her son, Nicholas (Amanda) Smith of Paw Paw; her grandchildren whom she adored, McKenna and Jackson; her brother, Michael (Linda) Barnes; her sister, Marcia (John) Carpenter-Hecox; her nieces & nephews, Kent (Lisa) Barnes, Ryan (Amanda) Barnes, Tara Brown, David Schaut, Jonathon (Allison) Barnes, Justin (Jessie) Barnes, Ann (Scott) Reagle, Scott (Cassie) Carpenter; and several great-nieces & nephews. She was sadly preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Richard "Dick" Barnes; brother-in-law, Roger Carpenter; and nephew, Timothy Carpenter.

A Celebration of Sue's Life will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at the Latitude 42 Brewing Company, 7842 Portage Rd. Portage MI 49002 . Arrangements by Richard A.
