Obituary
Sandra Lou (Gruizenga, Terpstra, Haagsma) Modderman, age 86, went peacefully to her Heavenly home and into the arms of Jesus October 19, 2023 at Faith Hospice - Trillium Woods in Byron Center, MI. She was born the oldest daughter of Marten and Lucille (Dekema) Gruizenga on April 9, 1937. Sandy attended Kalamazoo Christian Schools, Calvin College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and Parsons Business School. She was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church her entire life. Sandy was a loving mother and instilled faith in God, a strong work ethic, and moral values in her children. She worked hard to support her family. While she held many jobs, she considered her dream job to be Director of Worcester Chamber of Commerce Affiliates in Blackstone Valley, Auburn and Corridor 9/495. Sandy was also involved in her community and especially enjoyed her time as a board member of Whitinsville Christian Schools, Alternatives Unlimited Inc., and Unibank in Whitinsville, Massachusetts. In retirement, Sandy eventually moved back to Kalamazoo, MI. She spent many enjoyable hours working at the Kalamazoo Christian School Association thrift store, "Second Impressions." She loved to read, spend time with family and friends, and volunteer at Westwood Christian Reformed Church (Kalamazoo, MI). Sandy was preceded in death by her sons Kraig Terpstra and Kevin Terpstra; husbands James Terpstra, Herman Haagsma, Richard Modderman; and stepson, James Haagsma. Many more beloved family members and friends will greet her in Heaven. Sandy is survived by her son, Kurtis (Kimberly) Terpstra; daughter, Heidi Terpstra; stepchildren Joy Haagsma, Janet (Robert) Arbogast, and Todd (Deb) Modderman; grandchildren Alexis Terpstra, Seth (Cailey) Terpstra, Brandis Haagsma, Katie Arbogast, Kristi Arbogast, and Martha (Andrew) Bergman; and great-grandchildren McKenna and Liam Terpstra; sister, Jena (Paul) Meulman; brother, Dennis (Ruth) Gruizenga; and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held for Sandy 12 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Westwood CRC, 620 Northampton Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49006. Visitation will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. prior to the service. A reception will be held after the service.
