Obituary
Roseleen Scobey age 77 of Wayland, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly at home on the family farm November 20, 2024 after a brief battle with breast cancer. Rose was the youngest daughter of John and Izola Stamm. She grew up on the family farm in Hastings, Michigan, and was a 1965 graduate of Hastings High School. She was proud of the fact that she received an "A" in penmanship and loved to write in cursive. She married William Scobey in May of 1966. They were able to purchase 80 acres of his family's land north of Wayland in 1976 and established Scobey's Produce. Following in her parent footsteps, Rose raised vegetables and continued the tradition of going to the Bank Street Farmers Market in Kalamazoo. She was proud to say that she had been to the market ever since she was in a highchair. She attended for 77 summers! This past summer, she was there selling their famous sweet corn and beans and her handmade quilts and potholders. She enjoyed setting up an attractive display on the market stand and making zinnia bouquets, but, most of all, she enjoyed building relationships with customers that turned into friendships. On the farm she influenced and molded a strong work ethic into numerous young people whose first job was weeding and picking beans. She leaves a legacy of love, hard work, high-quality produce, and good food! As she slowed down on the farm, she enjoyed cooking (evidenced by hundreds of cookbooks in her collection), a love of antiques, her button collection, love of a good garage sale, and quilting. She will be deeply missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, all of those who called her "Ma," and those who called her friend. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William; children Timothy (Traci) Scobey and Julie (Jeff) Meyers; grandchildren Nathan (Lillian) Meyers, Caeleb Meyers, Tyler LaPorte, Sara Scobey (Hunter), and Katelyn Rose Scobey; and sister-in-law, Betty Stamm. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Stamm; and sister, Klasiena VanDenburg. Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 4 - 7 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2024 at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home (Wayland Chapel), 312 N. Main St., Wayland, MI 49348. A celebration Mass of Roseleen's life will commence 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2024, with visitation one hour prior, at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, 128 Cedar St., Wayland, MI 49348. Luncheon will follow at 1 p.m at the Lumberyard Event Center in Wayland. In honor of Roseleen and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Therese School. Interment will be at Rutland Township Cemetery. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.kubiakcookwayland.com in their guest book online.
