Obituary
Rodney "Rod" Whitcomb, affectionately known to many as "Hot Rod," went home to be with the Lord on May 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, ingenuity, and love for family.
Born on March 18, 1959, to James and Marguerite Whitcomb, Rod graduated from Portage Central High School in 1977. He earned an associate degree in HVAC and obtained numerous certifications in the skilled trades. Throughout a career spanning more than 50 years, he built a reputation as a talented tradesman and entrepreneur building a significant real estate portfolio. Whether working in HVAC, maintaining equipment, investing in real estate, or tackling a new project, Rod was always eager to learn, build, and create.
Known for his resourcefulness and determination, the "Rodfather" was often the first-person family and friends called when they needed help. He had a gift for fixing things and a willingness to lend a hand whenever it was needed. His ability and "old school" work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of many.
Outside of work, you could find Rod riding or wrenching on anything with a motor, including his classic cars, boats and bikes. His favorite holiday was the 4th of July, and he was always sure to have the biggest and loudest fireworks. He was an animal lover who rehabbed many wild animals and had a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs. He found great joy in spending time with family and friends sharing stories, laughter, and adventures.
Rod married his first love, Sandy Lewis, in February 1979 and they were blessed to welcome their 5 children together. Later in life Rod got a second chance at love and married Susan Hardy, in June 2023, after 20 years of love and companionship.
Rod was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marguerite Whitcomb, and his sister-in-law, Carol Whitcomb.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan; his children, Rodney (Julianne) Whitcomb, Melissa (Ara) Whitcomb, Monica (Luke) Barber, Amanda Whitcomb, and Ashleigh Whitcomb; his grandchildren, Cameron Wilson, Alexis Whitcomb, Kyleigh Mason, Charlee Barber, Chase Barber, Alexandria Whitcomb, Taylor Keister, Emarie Keister, Ivy Brown, and Olivia Brown; his siblings, Reg Whitcomb, Dorothy Dzioba, Judi (Randy) Whitcomb, Rick (Diane) Whitcomb, and John Burns, who was like a brother; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members will cherish his memory.
Rod will be remembered for his contagious laugh, capable hands, generous heart, quick wit, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey. His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the lessons he shared, and the memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate the Life of Rod Whitcomb at Langeland Family Funeral Home located at 3926 S 9th St. Kalamazoo, MI, 3 to 7 PM on Monday the June 8, 2026. Rod's family will lay him to rest in a private ceremony at Portage South Cemetery on Tuesday the 9th.
