Robert Hughes Becker, 19 of Portage, passed away on October 2, 2023, in Parowan, Utah. He was born on May 31, 2004, in Detroit, Michigan to Jay and Gretchen (Leathers) Becker.

Robert was an outstanding 2022 graduate of Portage Northern High School. He was a track and field athlete competing in discus, shotput and hammer-throw events. As a lover of nature, her was a member of the school's Environmental Club and took an EFA class for conservation biology at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. He appreciated arts as an upright bassist in orchestra and a member of the school's improv team. He was also a member of the National Honors Society

Robert was baptized at Portage United Church of Christ and was a member of the youth group. He found connection with divinity through nature, where he was most connected to the love and trust of the divine. His willingness to help served him on several mission trips he took with the youth group. He was also a member of the G3 band through the youth group.

Roberts love and talent for music was greater than his school and youth groups. He was a bass player with two other bands, Hazy Minds, and Frogs and Toads. He wrote music and played several instruments including the electric bass, acoustic bass, upright bass, acoustic guitar, ukulele, harmonica, and piano.

Robert loved to read, in every city he visited he found a favorite library and reading spot. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and be in nature where he found an appreciation for the environment and conservation. He spent a lot of his time at the Kalamazoo Nature Center's DeLano Farms, working, learning, and creating friendships. Through Workaway he worked with Inn at Shaker Mill Falls in New York and Dayempur Farm in Illinois. Most recently he was working with the Utah Conservation Corps. One of his many life's goals was to contribute through sustainable agriculture where he could combine his love of environment, cultivation, and nature.

Robert had many incredible qualities. His compassion and kindness could warm a room. He also made several one-on-one connections with friends over a cup of tea. His humor and fun wit could bring a smile to any face. He was resourceful and introspective, always eager to seek a deeper understanding of the world around him. He was inquisitive and philosophical, always wanting to learn more. Robert was an independent man of strong conviction and had a solid moral compass. His loving and easygoing style was felt by everyone around him.

Robert is survived by his parents Jay and Gretchen Becker; his Brother John Becker; his uncle Nathan (Alicia) Becker; his cousins Trent, Graham, and Jack Becker; as well as many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service will be held for Robert on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Portage United Church of Christ 2731 W. Milham Ave. Portage, MI 49024. A visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm with the funeral service beginning at 1:30 and a light reception at church to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Robert to something he was so passionate about, DeLano Farms of the Kalamazoo Nature Center 7000 N. Westnedge Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
