As the youngest child by 15 years, Dick spent a lot of time traveling the country with his parents which started his love for geography. They started their family in 1963 with the arrival of Kimberly Kay and in 1967, Holly Ann was born. Dick spent the majority of his working life at Shakespeare, as did his father, in computer science. His faith was very important to him, and he and Marcia attended Third Christian Reformed Church for over 65 years, volunteering in nearly every capacity.
