Richard Esman

Richard Allen Esman passed away at home April 16, 2025 after a long, brave battle with cancer. Rich was 69 years old, born April 25, 1955 to the late Henry and Joyce (Bertch) Esman.

A devoted father, grandfather, husband and friend, he lived a life filled with kindness, strength, and a deep love for his family. Rich grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, graduating from Kalamazoo Central and attending KVCC. He worked in the printing industry until his retirement.

A man of many interests and talents, Rich had a passion for life that was evident in everything he did. With the help of family and friends, he built his own home, rebuilt several cars, created a special piece of furniture and handmade ukelele for each of his grandchildren and was constantly busy repairing or tinkering with something. He enjoyed fishing, camping, music festivals, cooking on his Big Green Egg and diving headfirst into any new adventure that caught his eye.

Rich is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan (Johnston) Esman, children Benjamin (Sara) Esman, Elizabeth Esman and Daniel Esman, grandchildren Caleb, Kylee, Jacob, Libby and Allie; siblings Linda (Steve) DeSmit, Ronald (Yukari) Esman and Gary (Cathy) Esman; mother-in-law Joanne Johnston, brother-in-law David (Terri Dymek) Johnston and several beloved nieces and nephews.

The life of any party, his legacy lives on through the memories created with family and friends over gatherings filled with laughter and love. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Wheatland Music Organization or Blissfest Music Organization.

Friends may visit with Rich's family on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 12:00-1:00 PM, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo, 49009, where his service will be held at 1:00 PM. A private graveside will be held at Roof Cemetery.
