Richard, age 89, passed away on November 29, 2019. Richard was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on April 22, 1930, the son of the late Harry and Evelyn (Kroft) Glass. In 1951, he enlisted and served our country with honor in the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1954. In 1957 he earned his MBA from the University of Michigan. He would remain an ardent UofM fan for life. He loved watching the Michigan athletic programs and was a strong supporter of the University. He began working at J.B. Webb Co. in Detroit where he met Frances Boshaw. They fell in love and were married on March 7, 1958. She preceded him in passing in July of this year. While in Detroit he worked as the Assistant Personnel Director for Northville State Hospital. He eventually became the Personnel Director at the State Hospital in Kalamazoo; he retired after more than thirty-five years. In his retirement he followed his true passion of teaching and served students at both WMU and Kalamazoo Valley. He also took time to mentor elementary, middle school, and high school students and enjoyed their energy and enthusiasm. He was active in the community volunteering at the KIA Art Fair, The USTA Boys' National Championships, Kalamazoo Senior Services, Meals on Wheels, and Loaves and Fishes. Richard and Frances were members of Portage United Church of Christ (PUCC) for over 54 years; while there he served in many positions. When not working or volunteering, Richard enjoyed skiing, tennis, theater, reading and anything that allowed him to interact with others. Richard and Frances were well traveled and made it to six continents and many parts of the United States. He is survived by three children, Scott Glass, Nancy Glass, and Thomas (his partner Paul Fleming) Glass; granddaughter, Erika Glass; and many friends. In accordance with his wish cremation will take place and a memorial service to honor his life will be held in the spring and interment will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
