Patrick Douglas "Doug" Smith, age 81, of Paw Paw, Michigan, passed away on May 30, 2026.
Doug was born on June 23, 1944 in Yale, Michigan, the son of Marvin and Veronica Smith. He was raised with strong family values and a quiet sense of responsibility that stayed with him throughout his life. He shared a lifelong bond with his sister, Judy, who remained an important part of his early years.
Doug graduated from Sandusky High School and went on to attend Western Michigan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After college, he served his country in the United States Air Force, an experience that shaped his discipline, sense of duty, and steady approach to life.
Following his military service, Doug built a long and respected career in business management. He worked for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and later at the Welch Foods, from which he eventually retired. He was known for his dependability, quiet leadership, and pride in doing things the right way.
Outside of work, Doug enjoyed a simple and meaningful life. He was an avid golfer who valued time outdoors and the friendships formed on the course. He also served as a Boy Scout leader, where he mentored young people with patience and steady encouragement, leaving a lasting impact on those he guided.
Doug is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith; his children, Michael Smith and Sarah Varricchio; and his grandchildren, Hannah and Harper Smith, Isabella, Lucia, Monica, Xavier, and Maria Varricchio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Veronica Smith, and his sister, Judy.
A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories in his honor. Following the service, Doug will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
Doug will be remembered for his steady presence, devotion to family, and the quiet, lasting impact he had on those who knew him.
