Pamela Jean Slater, age 77, of Portage, MI, passed away with her daughters by her side on December 16, 2025. Pam was born on April 23, 1948, to Frederick and Jean (Wheeler) Zidell. Pam grew up in Portage, Michigan. She graduated from Portage Central High School in 1967.

Shortly after high school, Pam met a young man from Parchment at the Swartz Drive-In. His name was John Slater. They began dating, and it wasn't long before the couple found themselves deeply in love. With a desire to spend the rest of their lives together, John and Pam were united in marriage on July 13, 1968, at St. Luke Episcopal Church. Together they welcomed two daughters, Shela and Shelley, into their hearts and home.

After the wedding, Pam began working at Upjohn in Portage. She worked there for over 20 years until her retirement.

Pam will be remembered for her love for her family. She enjoyed shopping, gardening, and spending time with her dogs. In her earlier years, she enjoyed boating. Most of all, she will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to those she loved. Her kindness touched everyone she met.

Pam was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 50 years, John as well as her brother Christopher Zidell and her grandchildren John Phelps, Chelsea Cronk and Jacob Phelps.

She is survived by her two daughters: Shela (Brian) Cronk and Shelley (Rich) Phelps; her brother Mark Zidell; three grandchildren: Ashley (Austin) Carlson, Amanda (Nathan Roberts) Cronk and Chase (Taylor Benedict) Cronk as well as her great grandson Cole Carlson.

This last year was a struggle for Pam with various health issues. Her family is so thankful for the care and support provided to Pam by her brother Mark.

A private burial has taken place. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the SPCA at https://www.spcaswmich.org/.
