Life Story / Obituary
Norma Overbay Tehan was a loving wife, mother, and grandma who always kept her family in the center of her thoughts. Norma always kept her eye on the many blessings in her life, and each day she tried to share her happiness with the many people she loved.
With the end of the Great War, the 1920's emerged as a decade of celebration. The stock market soared to new heights and industry flourished. In Indianapolis, Indiana, Arthur S. and Lucile (Huls) Overbay discovered another, more personal reason to celebrate. On August 19, 1920 they were blessed with the healthy birth of their daughter Norma.
Norma grew up in Indiana with the company of her brother Arthur and sister Joyce. After graduating from Shortridge High School, she enrolled at Christian College for Women where she was crowned "Athletic Queen" for her swimming and other achievements. Norma later transferred to Indiana University where she soon became an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She graduated with a degree in English.
Norma married Charles Tehan and was a loving, supportive wife for more than fifty-five years. Norma and Charles were blessed with two handsome sons, Alan and Bruce. Norma was pleased to see her family grow with the addition of a daughter-in-law Patti and two beautiful granddaughters, Kelly (Adam) Barnes and Lisa Tehan.
In her spare time, Norma enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and socializing with friends. As a member of the Meridian Hills Country Club, Norma met and socialized with many of her closest friends. Forever the "Athletic Queen," Norma was an excellent golfer and an outstanding bowler. At the age of seventy-nine she once rolled an amazing 238 game. In addition to her athletic pastimes, Norma enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and spending time with her family on the North Shore of Lake Wawasee.
Norma was the happiest when she was with her family, and in their company a familiar smile always brimmed over her lips. Among the many people whose hearts she touched, Norma will be greatly missed and frequently remembered.
Norma died on Tuesday, October 25, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles and her sister Joyce Wright. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, October 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2 in the Robertson Chapel at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis 46260. Memorial contributions may be made to your charity of choice. Please visit Norma's personal memory page at www.lifestorynet.com where you may share a personal memory or arrange for flowers. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Leppert Life Story Funeral Home, Nora Chapel.
