Nellie Wiersema

Nellie G. Wiersema, age 96, went home to be with her Lord on June 4, 2019. Nellie was born December 30, 1922 in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of Kryn and Jennie (Westerhof) Scheurwater. She was a member of Covenant United Reformed Church, where she was active as a Bible study leader. Nellie attended Christian schools in Byron Center, MI and Kalamazoo, MI, and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. She attended Calvin College, worked in various industries during World War II, and later moved to California where she worked and received training to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Until her retirement she worked as an LPN at Bronson Hospital and in other nursing facilities. On March 30, 1962 she married Nicholas Wiersema of Kalamazoo and Nick preceded her in death in 2000. She was also preceded by her parents, a sister Jessie Scheurwater, and a brother Gerrit Scheurwater. Nellie is survived by two sisters, Connie Scheurwater and Anne (August) Faber; special cousins Harold (Doris) Vlietstra and Janice (Dennis) VandenBerg; and a number of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 5:00pm on Sunday, June 9th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial and Cremation Services, 3926 S. 9th St., Kalamazoo, MI 49009. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Monday, June 10th at the Funeral Home with Rev. Phillip Stoffregen officiating. Following a luncheon there will be a burial in Alamo Center Cemetery.
