Michael Alan Hettinger, Kalamazoo, MI, 61, passed away at his home Friday morning, July 28th, 2023. He was born November 22, 1961, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the youngest child of Vern and Lois Hettinger. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Vern Hettinger and two nephews Jonathan Braman, and Andrew Babcock. On September 30th, 1989, Michael married Karen Tanner from Trenton, MI.

Surviving are three children, Michael Alan Hettinger, Emma Christine Hettinger, and Benjamin Franklin Hettinger. His children were his pride and joy. Also, surviving is his former wife, Karen Hettinger, his mother Lois Christine Hamilton Hettinger, his siblings, Debra (James) Thompson; Kerry (Celeste) Hettinger; Edwin (Colleen) Hettinger; Pamela (Raymond) Babcock. Also including many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Michael was a life-long student of science, music, law, and theology. He became a musician playing on several worship teams over the years. He became a Certified Respiratory Therapist and worked at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI for several years before law school. Michael graduated from Portage Northern High School in Portage, MI in 1980; from Spring Arbor University in 1990; and from Notre Dame Law School in South Bend, IN, in 1994 where he earned his J.D.

Michael and Edwin opened Hettinger & Hettinger Law in Kalamazoo, MI, then subsequently moved to Portage, MI after several years where for a time, Kerry Hettinger also practiced with them. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Friends may meet the family from 10:00-10:50am on Friday, August 4th at Renovation Church, 1715 W Centre Ave, Portage MI 49024. A funeral service at the church will begin at 11:00, interment will follow at Cook Cemetery, Pavilion Township on the North side of East OP Ave, 1/3-mile East of South 34th St. in Scotts, MI. Rev. Greg Van Heukelom of Calvary Community Church will officiate the service. Services are entrusted to Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 622 S Burdick St, Kalamazoo MI 49007.
