It is with profound sadness that the family of Mary Swanson McCrumb, of Sarasota, Florida, announces her peaceful passing on May 30, 2025, at the age of 75. Mary was deeply loved by her family and friends, all of whom are devastated by this immense loss.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Dennis McCrumb; her children, Kristin Swanson, and Michael and Erin (Carey) Swanson; and her beloved granddaughters, Eleri and Cora Swanson. She also leaves behind her brother, James Schoener, and a host of cherished friends who will miss her dearly. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, the Honorable James F. and Frances (Capdarest) Schoener.

Mary was a beloved and highly active resident of Pelican Cove in Sarasota. Her passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of all who knew her, especially her cherished family and the vibrant community she enriched so deeply.

Born on September 29, 1949, in Muskegon, Michigan, Mary dedicated her life to education. After attending Western Michigan University, she spent many fulfilling years as a middle school English teacher before becoming a highly respected principal in Marcellus, MI. Her passion for nurturing young minds left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues, who admired her dedication, wisdom, and compassionate leadership. After retiring from Marcellus, Mary continued her commitment to education as a professor at her alma mater, guiding and inspiring the next generation of educators.

Mary and Den met and married almost 35 years ago, forging a partnership built on their shared love for golf, travel, trivia, and boating. They spent many happy years golfing together at the Moors in Portage, Michigan, enjoying the camaraderie of a wonderful group of friends. Den will miss her deeply.

Upon retiring to Pelican Cove, Mary embraced an active and engaged lifestyle. She could often be found on the golf course at Prestancia, enjoying friendly competition and the fellowship of her fellow players. Her enthusiasm for pickleball was equally infectious, and she was a familiar face on the courts, always ready for a spirited game. She particularly enjoyed sharing both pickleball and golf with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Mary's commitment to her community extended beyond sports. She was a driving force in the Pelican Cove communications committee, where her clear vision and dedication helped keep residents informed and connected. Her artistic eye and technical skill also shone through in her active participation in the Photography Club, capturing the beauty of Pelican Cove and its residents. A proud member of the Yacht Club, she loved taking the boat out with her family to search for dolphins, go tubing, and explore Midnight Pass.

Mary particularly cherished her role as "Mimi," delighting in every moment spent with her beloved granddaughters, Eleri and Cora. She found immense joy in watching them grow, whether on the softball field or volleyball court, exploring Europe, or simply sharing special times baking and drinking cappuccinos. Her granddaughters, who adored their Mimi and treasured their time together, will miss her more than words can say.

One of Mary's greatest joys was traveling, a passion she enthusiastically shared with her children and grandchildren. She meticulously planned unforgettable trips, particularly to Europe, where she delighted in introducing them to new cultures, historical sites, and the wonders of the world. These adventures created cherished memories and instilled a lifelong love of exploration in her grandchildren.

Mary was known for her intelligence, class, sharp wit, and unwavering optimism. She was highly respected and loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, intellectual curiosity, and boundless energy. She will be profoundly missed.

A memorial service will be held at The Wilbanks in Pelican Cove on November 8, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Junior League of Sarasota in Mary's memory.
